« Synergies » against mistreatment, abuse and sexual exploitation - 7 countries in Latin America

The project

Many children and adolescents in Latin America and the Caribbean grow up suffering numerous forms of discrimination and abuse. Mistreatment and sexual violence are among the the most serious demonstrations of the vulnerability of children on this continent.

BICE’s « Synergies » project began in  July 2011 in Brazil, Bolivia, Chili, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic and Uruguay.  Its aim is to promote profound social change, enabling children and adolescents to better protect themselves against abuse, ensuring that they have a voice within their communities, and that violence is not ignored, nor left unpunished.

The model for this project incorporates a respect for the rights of children and adolescents as legal subjects. The  project is carried out in schools and within the community. The aim is to set up a system of integrated intervention, taking into account community, institutional, family and individual resources in the prevention of mistreatment and sexual violence.

Our activities

  • Training and awareness-raising for groups of children
  • Awareness-raising campaigns for the prevention of mistreatment and sexual violence in the 7 countries of the region, for children and their parents
  • Parental awareness campaigns
  • Training, awareness-raising and meetings with local authorities, NGOs and members of the community
  • Training of public authority networks, members of NGOs, heads of communities, and parents, in the fight against violence and sexual abuse
  • Preparation of an information kit on this theme
  • Distribution of the rights of the child in schools of the region
  • Support for child victims and their relatives

Key figures

  • Training for 2400 children and adolescents and for  teachers of awareness groups
  • 1000 parents will participate in the project
  • 360 authorities, social workers, civil servants and ”community representatives” involved in the project
  • 125.000 adults and children  will be informed throughout the duration of the project
