The representatives of two organisations discussed how to enforce the Convention on the Rights of the Child in Russia.

BICE's Liaison Officer for Europe and CIS in Moscow, Anna Guertsik, and Nodar Hananashvili, deputy director general of the Enlightment Fund, Bice's partner in Russia, met with Bertrand Bainvel, UNICEF representative in the Russian Federation, on June 2009.

The purpose of the meeting was to inform them about the Word Appeal for a new mobilisation for Childhood, initiated by Bice on June 4 in Geneva. Representatives from the two organisations discussed how to distribute the document as widely as possible. Bainvel and the Communication Consultant for the organisation, Jackie Gaskell, received all the documents of the Appeal.

The meeting was an opportunity to talk about the strategies to promote the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) in Russia. In fact, the CRC has become the basic document for the programs and activities for children throughout the world.

"In Russia," says Hananashvili, "the tendency is to take decisions affecting the children based on different national laws and not on the CRC."

Various events will be organised by the Russian Federation for the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the CRC and for the 20 years of ratification by the USSR next year. The partners of Bice on location also wish to launch new initiatives for children.
